“My dream is to write a European version of Compendium of Materia Medica.”
今天我们要讲述的故事主人公，是一位不远万里从法国来到中国广州，专程学习中医的学生吉贝，他今年七月从广州中医药大学毕业。
This story is about Brochet Jean-Baptiste, a student from France. He came to Guangzhou to study traditional Chinese medicine and he will be graduating from Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine in last July.
中医是承载着中国古代人们同疾病作斗争的经验和理论知识，通过长期医疗实践逐步形成并发展成的医学理论体系。中医学以阴阳五行作为理论基础，将人体看成气、形、神的统一体，通过“望闻问切”四诊合参的方法探求病情。
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a theoretical medical system that was formed and developed over the course of Chinese history. It carries the experience and theoretical knowledge of ancient Chinese people in fighting against diseases through long-term medical practice. Based on the theory of yin and Yang, and five elements, TCM regards the human body as the unity of Qi, form and spirit, and explores the natue of disease by the method of “observing, listening, asking and taking the pulse”.
中医，即相对西医而言。最早的西医进入中国，主要通过广州的教会医学院。为什么是广州呢？追溯其原因，一是由于广州地理位置优越，广州作为河港、海港合一的东方贸易大港，山环水、水抱山，云山珠海水连天，山为屏障水通四海，符合“圣人处国者，必于不倾之地”的标准，是我国历史最早、规模最大的主要对外通商口岸与接纳东西方文化的古都之一；二是因为当时清政府实行闭关锁国政策，只有广州允许外国人往来，所以最早的教会医学院在广州创立，也使得中西方医学在此产生强烈碰撞。
Traditional Chinese medicine is relative to Western medicine. Western medicine first came to China mainly through the missionary medical schools in Guangzhou. Why Guangzhou? First of all, Guangzhou enjoys its superior geographical position. “A wise man should choose a land of invincibility when he was to establish a state” is an ancient Chinese maxim. Surrounded by mountains and rivers, Guangzhou is a perfect place by this standard, with interconnected rivers leading to the sea and mountains acting as natural barriers. The city has long been an Oriental trade port combining river harbor and seaport all into one. It is one of the earliest and largest major foreign trade ports in China and one of the ancient capitals where East and West met. Moreover, because of the close-door policy by the Qing government, Guangzhou was the only port where foreigners were allowed to come and go. As a result, the earliest missionary medical school was founded in Guangzhou, which also caused strong collision between Chinese and Western medicine.
20世纪初，传统中医学遭遇重大冲击。广东在全国树立起了中医办学自救图强的旗帜，其中又以广州中医药大学影响最为深远，使得中医学于风雨中传灯。中医学作为我国的文化瑰宝，历经坎坷，传承至今，已经不再局限于中国，更是在世界上产生了深远的影响。2018年10月1日，世界卫生组织首次将中医纳入其具有全球影响力的医学纲要。更多的外国友人因此认识、了解到中医学，对其产生了浓厚的兴趣，其中就有我们今天的主人公吉贝。
At the beginning of the 20th century, traditional Chinese medicine suffered a significant blow. Guangdong sought self-salvation and improvement, and set up traditional Chinese medicine teaching institutes, among which Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine had the most far-reaching influence. With all these efforts, TCM has been carried forward through hardship. Traditional Chinese medicine, a cultural treasure of China, has gone through ups and downs. It is no longer confined to China, but also has gained profound impact in the world. On October 1, 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) decided to include traditional Chinese medicine in its influential global medical compendium for the first time. As a result, more and more foreign friends started know and understand Chinese medicine, and have developed aconsiderable interests in it. Among them is Brochet Jean-Baptiste.
吉贝出生于1990年，法国人，不见面听不出来他是外国人，他甚至可以无障碍阅读中国古医书。从19岁到30岁，人生最重要的青春岁月都在中国度过。对于中国的传统文化，比如中医，比如太极，他是发自内心的喜欢，觉得它们“很有用”。他专门去武当山学了半年太极，疫情期间闲着就在家练习，打太极可以拉筋活血理气，“可能比瑜伽有更好的效果，只是叫法不一样。”中医，医和道不分家，他很喜欢道家思想，当初学中医就是觉得中医讲究道法自然，自然的东西应该被遵循和推崇。
Born in 1990, Brochet Jean-Baptiste came from France. If you are not talking to him in person, you won’t know he is a foreigner from his accent. He can even read Chinese ancient medical books with no difficulties. From the age of 19 to 30 are the most important years of youth for anybody, and Brochet has spent his valuable period in China. He loves many elements of the Chinese traditional culture, such as Chinese medicine, Tai Chi, and thinks they are “very useful”. He went to Mount Wudang to learn Tai Chi for half a year. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he practiced Tai Chi at home when he couldn’t go out. Tai Chi can stretch muscles, activate blood circulation and regulate qi. “It may be better than yoga, but it just got a different name.” In Chinese medicine, you cannot separate medicine and Taoism. Brochet is very much into Taoism. When he started to learn Chinese medicine, he thought that Chinese medicine stresses the way of nature, and believes natural things should be followed and respected.
与之前“非典”不同的是，此次新冠肺炎的治疗中，中西药结合和中西药并用成为一大特点。全国新冠肺炎患者治疗中，中医药治疗更为普遍，其中应用中医药的病例高达九成，甚至更多。北京地坛医院治愈出院的130确诊病例中，中医参与救治率为100%。这更加印证了，贝吉所说的中医“很有用”的想法。
Compared to the treatment of SARS, the combined use of Chinese medicine and Western medicine has become an important feature of the treatment of COVID-19 infected patients. TCM has been widely applied to treat COVID-19 infected patients in China, with the TCM utilization rate as high as 90%. Among all 130 cured and discharged COVID-19 infected patients from Beijing Ditan Hospital, they were all beneficiaries of TCM. That is why Brochet Jean-Baptiste keeps saying that TCM is very useful.
7月份，吉贝拿到了广州中医药大学的研究生毕业证，8月初，他将启程前往德国，边学德语边找兼职工作，他希望在一年的时间内学好德语，同时攒点钱，和当地的一个朋友合伙开一家中医诊所。他还有一个远大的理想，等他成为一名有资历的“老中医”，他要写一本欧洲的《本草纲目》。
In July this year, Brochet Jean-Baptiste succeeded in obtaining his postgraduate degree from Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. In early August he will leave for Germany to study German while looking for a part-time job. He hopes that he can master German in one year, save some money and open a TCM clinic with his friends. His ultimate ambition is to write a European version of Compendium of Materia Medica when he is finally deemed a qualified “old doctor of Chinese medicine”.
这段时间，他陆续和中国的朋友告别，希望我们的节目拍摄能为他11年的中国生活画上一个圆满的句号，“我回去之后一定会想念中国。”
For now, he has been bidding goodbye to his Chinese friends, hoping that our program’s shooting could bring a perfect ending to his 11 years in Chinese.“I will certainly miss China after I go back to Europe.”
